Anthracite Journal is rooted in the distinctive context of northeastern Pennsylvania—historically shaped by the material, social, and environmental legacies of anthracite coal. Architecture is inseparable from the forces that underlie it: material extraction, the labor that transforms them, the infrastructures that carry them, and the narratives that endure long after industries fade. In this context, anthracite is both material and a metaphor: dense, pressurized, catalytic, valuable, complicated, and specific.

Anthracite Journal is edited by an interdisciplinary team of graduate and undergraduate students from the Marywood University School of Architecture. As a student-led journal, Anthracite is grounded in the belief that architectural discourse is enriched by multiple perspectives and should not be limited by our own academic walls. We hope to interact and engage in broader conversations with students, scholars, artists, writers, practitioners, and anyone interested in the built environment.
